Visiting
Altindere National Park in Maçka Country provides a magnificent setting
for the 14th century SIMELA Monastry, perched high on a cliff face 270 m
above a deep gorge. Surrounded by the ruins of the monks quarters, it is
a church covered inside and out with brilliant frescoes. Southeast of
Trabzon is Lake Uzungöl, a lovely alpine lake, surrounded by mountains
and meadow, excellent for camping, hiking and fishing. Also visiting
Hagia Sophia Museum, which is built in 13th century by Byzantines. RIZE Visiting
Islam Pasa Mosque, which is from 16th century and the remains of Genoese
Castle. Continue to Çamlihemsin, staddling a rushing stream. Nearby is
the Firtina Valley. ideal for canoeing, and the beautiful Zil Castle and
an old stone bridge. After walking around Ayder's rolling meadows,
trekking on Kaçkar Mountains, enjoying the thermal pools is also
avaliable. Ikizdere plateaus is a great spot for hang gliding and bird
watching. ARTVIN Artvin
is the capital of the province. At the foot of the escarpment, a ruined
16th century castle crowns a rocky outcrop. The traditional old Turkish
houses. Artvin's mild climate makes summer visits delightfully
refreshing and lots of tourist, as well as brightly - clad locals,
throug to the Kafkas Festival every June. The adventurous might like to
attempt white-water rafting on the wild and romantic Çoruh River.
