| Aphrodisias was
first inhabited in the third millenium BC. warship of Aphrodisias,
universal goddess of love and mother fertility, began in the 7th century
BC. However, the city was not famous until Roman times, when it was
considered as a free state and developed into a religious, literary and
artistic centre. The agora, temple, baths and stadium are from this
period. When the Byzantines conquered the city, it was christened the
town Stravopolis. Byzantines built the temple, a church and founded a
diocese. The celebrated white and blue-grey marble from a nearby quarry
produced material for highly skilled works works of sculpture. And it is
worth to see.
